The Subjects – an experimental and experiential project

Subjects_bannerI was made aware some time ago of a project to place some creative folk under duress, in this case sleep deprivation, and then see how that effected creative outcomes.  That project is begins on the 9th of Feb.

The Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT), in partnership with Central Queensland University’s Appleton Institute, is running The Subjects.

The participants are

  • Artists Thom Buchanan
  • and Fee Plumley
  • Author Jennifer Mills
  • and  New York Times best selling novelist Sean Williams

They will be spending a week in residency at CQU’s Sleep Research Centre.  Their sleeping patterns will be disrupted and they will be under constant surveillance.

And considering we live in a Big Brother future (though not quite the same one Orwell was thinking of) we can peer into the experimented minds and interact with the test subjects.

You can read about the experiment here

You can view the bios of the test subjects here

You can ask them questions here

I plan to follow this next week.  I know two of the participants and know they are excited by the prospect of participation.  Good luck folks

Fascinating.

Sleep deprivation was one of the things we looked at when I was at university studying circadian rhythms etc. It was amazing some of the case studies and what they used to test subjects for their cognitive functioning under the duress of sleep dep.

I remember they used pinball with one of the subjects - who have five days without sleep could still beat the researcher. I'll be keeping a close eye on this too, given so many of us creative types go without sleep to fit our endeavours in around everything else expected of us!
My creative writing lecturer said he used to set his clock to wake up in the middle of the night/morning to write because he though that his critical faculties were at their weakest then, when his brain was emerging from sleep. It was either that or a glass of wine before starting to write :)

When I am writing novel length manuscripts i tend to start writing at 8pm and go for 2 hours, before then I don't seem to be able to get my mind to settle.

I am not sure if the experiment will be more sleep deprivation or sleep disruption ie they may still get the same amount of sleep but just out of the normal rhythm
This may be one of the crazier experiments I've heard of recently, and I'll be fascinated by the outcomes... and it surprises me not a whit to learn that Sean is taking part in it :)

I considered applying but
1) really haven't done a creative work that's substantial enough to place me in the company of the 4 above
2) I really, really really love my sleep

mmmm sleeeeep. I am unwilling to do much that takes away sleep. Except for getting up at 3am to travel to Abu Simbel... but that was exceptional :D
