Peacemaker gets game

Peacemaker-CR (1) Marianne de Pierres’ Peacemaker, published by Angry Robot is getting an interactive game adaptation from award winning Western Australian games company Stirfire Studios.  Just like  it happens films the deal is only at the optioning stage, but considering the team involved there’s room for optimism.

de Pierres has long standing in the Australian Speculative fiction scene as author of The Parrish Plessis Series and The Sentients of Orion and recently she’s been successful with a foray into young adult category with The Night Creatures trilogy.

Stirfire Studios well known for their successful scrolling Freedom Fall game look to be trying something different this time with a move into interactive storytelling.

So I’m intrigued, scrolling games aren’t my thing but if Stirfire is going along more of a FPS or even something like Final Fantasy, I’d be interested.

Peacemaker Cover Reveal

Long time readers of the blog will remember the Peacemaker graphic novel launched by Marianne de Pierres in mid 2011. Peacemaker-CR

Marianne has been hard at work crafting that tale into two novels that will published by Angry Robot in 2014 and 2015.  Peacemaker (Book 1) is due for release by Angry Robot books in early May 2014.

So until that time you will just have to console yourself with the cover art by Joey Hi Fi, which was partly inspired by the graphic novel which illustrated by Brigitte Sutherland and created by Marianne.

More details about the book can be found on this page.

Night’s Engines has been released

but first a preview of the author that is bringing it to you.1

I reviewed Roil, the first in the Nightbound Lands series.  It was a blast.

I have Night’s Engines to read and review.  But if you want to get a taste of it here’s the free excerpt from Angry Robot.

1.You will have to go back and watch all of Trent’s book corners to determine if he is a comic genius or a deranged writer afflicted by the tropical heat and too much coffee

Angry Robot comes to the party with Ditmar Titles

Angry Robot is offering 50% off eligible Ditmar award titles.  This works out to be three books:

Kaaron Warren’s Mistification, Jo Anderton’s Debris and Trent Jamieson’s Roil

Roil-72dpi1debris300Mistification-72dpi

Now you don’t have to have read a mountain of books to nominate for the Ditmars, the only thing you need to have done(besides being a fan) is read an enjoyed one book.  I have read two of the above – I would have no hesitation in nominating either.

So if you’re stuck for a good book to nominate, have a go at one of the above

 TheCorpseRatKing-144dpi-197x300

Angry Robot have been pretty good to Aussie writers, publishing the likes of Trent Jamieson, Kaaron Warren and Jo Anderton.  Now we have the cover for Lee Battersby’s  The Corpse-Rat King which will appear from Angry Robot in September this year.

Lee is a veteran writer having published over 70 short stories, both locally and internationally.

He’s a passionate fan of Nottingham Forest Football Club, but nobody’s perfect.

Angry Robot - eBooks done right

One of my resolutions this year was to read more Australian Fiction and Speculative Fiction at that. I also wanted to support and promote Australian Specfic Small Press Publishing, hence my support of the wonderful team that makes up Twelfth Planet Press.

It was being plugged into the Aussie SpecFic community(blame Trent Jamieson), however, that I became aware of Angry Robot, a global imprint based in the UK.  After some cursory investigation I note that they appear to be doing things right (from my point of view at least) in so far as their books are:

  • DRM free (not a big deal considering how easy it is to strip but it the thought that counts)
  • Not Geo restricted
  • Priced under the $10 mark

Now they are not exactly Small press, they were an arm of HarperCollins UK before they were sold to Osprey Publishing, but they are doing right by the consumer so Iam willing to support them as well.  Not to mention they are also picking up Australian SpecFic writers like:

Slights (Angry Robot)Kaaren Warren with Slights

Slights is a deeply intense, disturbing read. Death is not the end, but this is not comforting, heartwarming or safe. The misery memoir craze of the last few years has overshadowed horror fiction’s impact with (allegedly) real-life experiences. Now it’s time for horror and fantasy fiction to fight back.

And some upcoming Steampunk from Trent Jamieson.

Angery Robot's mission statement can be found here.

Those of you who grew up in the 1980's and we fans of the Fighting Fantasy series of books might be interested to know that Angry Robot's Publishing Director is Marc Gascoine, who has been tied up in British gaming and associated publishing for 30 odd years ( you young uns might also know the name from your involvement with Games Workshop)

Apologies to Jonathan Strahan(if he's reading) for the gratuitous use of the term Specfic)
