Peacemaker gets game

Peacemaker-CR (1) Marianne de Pierres’ Peacemaker, published by Angry Robot is getting an interactive game adaptation from award winning Western Australian games company Stirfire Studios.  Just like  it happens films the deal is only at the optioning stage, but considering the team involved there’s room for optimism.

de Pierres has long standing in the Australian Speculative fiction scene as author of The Parrish Plessis Series and The Sentients of Orion and recently she’s been successful with a foray into young adult category with The Night Creatures trilogy.

Stirfire Studios well known for their successful scrolling Freedom Fall game look to be trying something different this time with a move into interactive storytelling.

So I’m intrigued, scrolling games aren’t my thing but if Stirfire is going along more of a FPS or even something like Final Fantasy, I’d be interested.

Peacemaker Cover Reveal

Long time readers of the blog will remember the Peacemaker graphic novel launched by Marianne de Pierres in mid 2011. Peacemaker-CR

Marianne has been hard at work crafting that tale into two novels that will published by Angry Robot in 2014 and 2015.  Peacemaker (Book 1) is due for release by Angry Robot books in early May 2014.

So until that time you will just have to console yourself with the cover art by Joey Hi Fi, which was partly inspired by the graphic novel which illustrated by Brigitte Sutherland and created by Marianne.

More details about the book can be found on this page.

Night Creatures to go live on Amazon

0068_RHABurnBrightFULL07.inddThe excellent Night Creatures series by Marianne de Pierres – Burn Bright , Angel Arias and Shine Light will be available in eBook form on Amazon at the end of March.

0078_RHAAngelArias03.inddPreviously its only been legally available in electronic form in Australia and New Zealand.  Which I am sure has been frustrating for Marianne and some of her international fans.

ShineLightI have read Burn Bright, and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I found it to be a fascinating mix of teen Goth culture, social comment, sci-fi action and adventure.  It’s one of those books that can be enjoyed by adults and mature teens. A boo that has something to say without beating you around the head with it.

For more news about the series hang out over on Marianne’s page here.

Sentients of Orion gets US makeover

SOO_Mirror-Space_US_TNThe Award winning Sentients of Orion by Marianne de Pierres has received a makeover from US Ebook distributor Ereads.

There’s been some difficulty trying to get the series in ebook form but it’s due to be released with all new eBook covers in a couple of months.

soo_dark-space_webMe I have a fondness for the old covers seen right. But when you compare them at thumbnail size I think the new ones have the edge.  What do you think?  Let Marianne know over at her site.

Tara Sharp Series Optioned

This rather excellent news popped into my inbox this morning.

Award-winning Aussie Creators Go Psychic

Sharp-Turn_web-200x306Hoodlum Entertainment and author, Marianne Delacourt, team up to bring sass and murder our TV screens.

Step aside The Mentalist and Lie to Me, there’s a new psychic in town and she’s home-grown. Meet Tara Sharp, an unemployed, twenty-something with a gift for reading auras and body language. Add a dose of dangerous clients and a bunch of oddball friends and you have the ingredients for a first rate comic mystery television series.

Bestselling, award-winning author Marianne Delacourt and award-winning multiplatform production company Hoodlum, today announced the option of Delacourt’s Tara Sharp series published by Allen and Unwin.

The Tara Sharp series by Australian author Marianne Delacourt (aka Marianne de Pierres) is light and sassy mystery adventure fiction with a touch of the psychic.  I reviewed Sharp Turn here.

It’s excellent news and comes on the heels of another of our writers announcing possible TV deals i.e. Sean Williams- The Crooked Letter.

Good luck Marianne - it’s a long way from Option to the TV set, but it’s still a marvellous milestone that brings that reality closer.

Tara Sharp gets a make over

stage-fright-200Marianne Delacourt is the pseudonym of speculative fiction author Marianne de Pierres.  Marianne writes the Tara Sharp series under that name and with the third in that series, Stage Fright released later this year, the website has undergone a makeover.

The Books

The Tara Sharp books can be best described as humourous crime with a paranormal flavour. The series will be ongoing, featuring the same cast of characters, though each book will be a stand alone adventure mystery.

Comparison’s have been drawn with Janet Evanovich’s wonderful Stephanie Plum novels (of which Marianne is a big fan), and readers of that series will find appealing similarities. But while they are definitely of the same genre, there are some key differences. To begin with, Mariann’e books are set in Australia. Most significantly though, Tara is Tara – not Stephanie! She’s a different type of girl.

Please pop over and let Marianne know what you think.

Cover Candy - Shine Light by Marianne de Pierres

The third in the Night Creatures series (Burn Bright, Angel Arias).  Its marketed as young adult, but having read Burn Bright I tend to think that it transcends marketing categorisation.

There’s interesting sci-fi, dystopic, social commentary elements to the series that should interest any fan of speculative fiction.

And of course its written by Marianne de Pierres who I find brings a special something to every genre she decides to explore.

Peacemaker Update – Marianne de Pierres

images (15)A while ago I reviewed a joint venture by the fabulous Marianne de Pierres and Brigette Sutherland.  The review of Peacemaker is here and you can download it from Marianne’s site here.

Now there’s been some interesting developments that have held up Issue 2.  Marianne has called for some help from her fans into helping decide what direction the series should take.

Visit her blog to find out the details and see what advice you may be able to offer.

Sentients of Orion eBooks available in the US

soo_dark-space_webMarianne de Pierres’ critically acclaimed Sentients of Orion series will be coming to the US in eBook form.  The first two books were previously released for a short period of time and then withdrawn.

Marianne happily informs us that the whole set is being made available in the very near future.

She’s even set up a website for the books - here

So who should buy Sentients of Orion?

There’s talented hard working authors who can work well within a genre  producing good works and giving the content hungry fans, their life sustaining space opera.

Then there are authors that bend the genre to their will infuse it with aspect of themselves that makes it wholly original.  I find Marianne to be one of those authors- if you want original space opera, something to give you that little bit extra I think you should check out the series.

I’ll be reading the entire series and reviewing it as part of Australian Women Writers 2012 National Year of Reading Challenge but don’t just rely on my opinions, go to the website and read what others have been saying.

Google books hits Australia

Google Books is now operating in Australia, teaming up with independents like Booktopia below.

booktopia.com.au - Australia's #1 online bookstore

Haven’t really had time to do a comprehensive search of content but it looks encouraging.

ImageFirst up we have Trent Jamieson’s Business of Death, the conclusion to his Deathworks series and incorporating the first two books in an omnibus.

On amazon it’s not available as an ebook (Gasp!) but its available as an ebook from Booktopia/Google for $12.99 which let’s face it is pretty bloody good for three books.

Edit: also available on Kobo for the same price.

Angel-Arias_web-192x300I was hoping for Rowena Cory Daniells’ King Rolen’s Kin Trilogy as it’s available as a bundle from the Sony store(if you happen to live in the US) but no luck, it’s not available on either Kobo or Google.

My final check for speculative fiction was Marianne de Pierres. Booktopia/Google has nine of her booksThe Sentients of Orion, The Parrish Plessis series and her two YA novels Burn Bright and Angel Arias.

I also tried looking for Jennifer Mills’ Diamond Anchor and Gone which I know to exist in ebook form - no luck.

So at this point in time it looks like it’s a bit patchy but it’s early days yet.

Angel Arias coming out in 3 weeks

Angel-Arias_web-192x300Angel Arias, sequel to Burn Bright, is coming out in roughly three weeks time – October 3rd if Booktopia is correct.

Burn Bright was brilliant, a dark, slightly sensual YA debut from Australia’s current queen of Sci-Fi.

To my mind it leaves Twilight and its clones in the dust.  Vampirism, mixed with social comment mixed with sci-fi, with a dollop of Dystopia.

Not heard of Marianne de Pierres? Check out the Interview I conducted with her here.  She also has a flash new comic.

Marianne’s Minions have already published some reviews – Cecilia at Confessions of a Bookie Monster and Jamie in the video below.

This is the type of young adult fiction that us …err older adults can really enjoy.

eComic Review - Peacemaker by Marianne de Pierres and Brigitte Sutherland

Peacemaker-comic-Marianne-de-Pierres-Brigitte-SutherlandPeacemaker Issue 1 is Marianne de Pierres’ first foray into graphic novels, comics, web comics (whatever the correct pop culture terminology is).  She’s teamed up with another Australian, Brigitte Sutherland to match the art to her written imaginings.  From what I can gather there’s still a series of Peacemaker novels in the works as well.

Pull up a hay bale while I tell you a story

This first issue introduces us to Virgin Jackson a Senior Ranger in  Park Western, a western(as in the American West) theme reserve where you can see the west as it was.  Only the park sits in the middle of a futuristic Australian megacity.

There’s been a death in the park and parks bosses have brought in an American Marshall to track down the culprits.  The conflict between Ranger and Marshall, liberated woman and ol’ fashioned lawman is established.  There’s also a hat tip to mysticism with Virgin ‘seeing’ totemic animals.

Calamity Jane meets Mega City One?

In some ways it has a similar feel as Glitter Rose, it’s a slipstream piece that ties together several genre’s western, sci-fi, supernatural and maybe a little romance.   It could easily have been Calamity Jane meets Megacity One, but its got a distinctive and original Pierres’ touch.

The first comic is 12 pages long, which did feel a little short to me, but it was enough to set the scene, establish the characters, and reveal the conflicts.  It ends on a minor cliff hanger and I am more than intrigued to pick up issue 2.

My lack of comic book/graphic novel reading leaves me at a disadvantage when commenting on the art.  In short I think Sutherland has done a great job with colours, the landscape looks right for a future Australia and the comic flows well visually.

I viewed it on my laptop and it would probably be a delight to read on an IPad or other colour reader.

It’s currently 99 cents, future issues will retail at $2.99.

Book Review–Glitter Rose by Marianne de Pierres

glitterrose

Glitter Rose by Marianne de Pierres, is the first (and only, so far) hardcover published by Twelfth Planet Press. It’s also a limited edition run with each of the copies signed by Marianne.

The Stories

The collection features five short stories – four previously published and one written specifically for this collection.

Four of the stories are set against the background of a near future Australia, on Carmine Island.  A former popular resort island, its inhabitants include the locals – a mix of mainland castaways looking for a quieter life, the island’s aboriginal population and the “indolent rich” who provide a tourist lifeline.  Carmine island’s latest colonisers, the spores, have drifted in from the deep ocean, they bring allergies and in severe cases, alterations to the inhabitants.

Glitter Rose is  Tinashi’s story. She's on the run from her life, drifting back to a place that once offered comfort, seeking it out again in the hope that she can heal what is troubling her.  The opening story, Glimmer by Dark, has a broad appeal then to any reader who has likewise moved away and then returned to a place seeking to recapture a past.  It also delicately draws the reader into the inner life of the island, as Tinashi is befriended by locals, snared in their the web of odd relationships. Lest you think this is some whimsical drama, Glimmer has a surprising and dark ending.

Moonlight at the Ritz directs our attention to the pleasure seeking “indolent young rich”.  Tinashi has settled in, a member of the Carmine Island Tourism auxiliary. There’s death,GlitterRose_Sketch1 sacrilege and neither the reader nor Tinashi is sure how much of what happens is reality or a spore altered dream.

The Flag Game centres on a competition the locals run, the official prize being a parcel of land -unofficially though its believed by the locals that the spores grant their own prize .  We find out what Tinashi is running from and the extent of the power the spores can exert.

Mama Ailon, nicely concludes the set.  Tinashi seeks redemption and  we come to understand the indigenous view of the spores and the island.

It can be hard to place Glitter Rose, it’s not a book that fits easily into genre categories, and while its pink (or is that Rose) cover might put off those men that have rather strict concepts of masculinity,  this collection is not wistful women and pink fairy dust.  There’s a dark edge to Glitter Rose and in that sense its perhaps iconically Australian – depicting a beautiful landscape with dangerous fauna & flora lying in wait.

Marianne’s writing is fluid, evocative and heart achingly lyrical - the sort of ritten ork you can just read aloud for the enjoyment of it.  Carmine might be based on Stradbroke island but de Pierres’ artful descriptions could be of any one of the small coastal communities of Australia yet to feel the full brunt of development or that have seen their heyday.  Perhaps this is what makes the stories, the characters, seem so genuinely real.

In the Book Shadow is the odd story out in this collection, but it’s a lovely quirky and slightly sinister tale of a Bookshop many of us would recognise. Indeed the bookstore that inspired it, Pulp Fiction, I have actually been to so the feeling “I know this place” that I had while reading was fully justified.

Credit where it’s due

Glitter-Rose-colour-internal_beach-gazing_HammillTwelfth Planet have done an excellent job on the production of Glitter Rose, this pint sized (it’s about A5 size) packet of pink compliments de Pierres’ words perfectly.  The internal illustrations both colour and black and white simply amplify the experience.

At $35 dollars, for a limited edition signed print run, this book is a must have for fans of Marianne – it’s the only place I believe where you will find all the Carmine Island stories together.

I think it’s also an excellent “Slipstream” or “Gateway” collection to give as a gift to young teens (or indeed adults) perhaps growing out of their Edward and Bella stage.  It’s a little bit Sci-fi, unselfconsciously Australian and a little bit Fantasy.  If de Pierres wasn’t a well known Sci-fi writer I’d hazard a guess it would be considered magic realism.

In these times of ebooks and electronic readers Glitter Rose takes full advantage of everything a book can be.

Note:  This was a review copy provided to me by Twelfth Planet Press

Marianne de Pierres on Authors and Social Media

marianneWelcome to the seventh interview in the Authors and Social Media series; where I interview some of Australia’s most acclaimed speculative fiction authors as well as some rising stars.  Today we have Marianne de Pierres, who really needs no introduction, answering  5 questions on Authors and Social Media.

Sean:

How important do you view social media to selling your books or interacting with fans?

Marianne:

It’s a large piece of the puzzle, but ultimately we don’t know really what makes one book sell over another. I think the important thing is to be yourself when using social media – don’t try and cater to a market. Let your own personality shine through in your posts and interactions. I treat it as a tool for self-expression and communication more than “selling”.

Sean:

Do you or would you want to receive any guidance from your publisher/agent on interacting via social media, both in a technical sense or in a 'professional presentation' sense?

Marianne:

Generally publishers encourage their authors to use social media, and will give rudimentary guidelines to those who are inexperienced. (Not every author knows about or wants to know about the ins and outs of twitter, FB, and tumblr and goodreads). However, the publisher only has so much time they can spend with any one author, so a lot depends on your interest and commitment. Of course books that sell well often have their own publisher-built and maintained website, which helps, because those kind tend to look very professional.

Sean:

There have been some recent examples of inexperienced authors reacting badly on the Internet in response to blog reviews e.t.c., what are your thoughts on being social media savvy? What advice would you give to new authors?

Marianne:

Getting into an argument online with anyone is a negative experience and I wouldn’t recommend it at all. The reality is that once you put your work in the public domain, you’re exposed. You have to think about how you will handle that, and each of us have different methods. Foremost though, you need to accept that you can’t control readers’ opinions. Having said that, no one has the right to contact you and be abusive. My advice is to be very careful who you enter into a dialogue with in these circumstances, usually nothing is gained from it. If you must reply, keep it simple and don’t encourage a second reply.

Sean:

In my experience Social media breaks down normal communication conventions. People can be more familiar and 'take liberties'.  Have you experienced problems where this ease of communication has lead to followers/fans 'crossing the line' or has your experience been entirely positive?

Marianne:

The most common thing I encounter is that people can be quite insensitive to your time/availability and  expect you to drop everything to read their manuscript. This pre-supposes that firstly, you want to do it, and secondly, you have the time. Nothing gets me crosser than this assumption. By and large though people are pretty cool when they contact me. I love the easy familiarity, it suits my nature. If anyone crosses the line, I just don’t reply.

Sean:

How vital is social media to the genre in which you write and how do you think social media will effect the way you write and interact in the future?

Marianne:

I think SM is its own kind of publisher already and that it will only continue to solidify its role as a medium for expressing creativity, and a vehicle from which to disseminate it as well. it’s quite an exciting thought really. I’m not sure what form this will take in the future, but it will affect everything in our lives, especially the way we think and how we form relationships.

RHABurnBrightFinal_CVR.inddI’d like to extend extra thanks Marianne for taking time to answer my questions while suffering from a temporary injury.

Marianne is a prolific Australian writer, writing across genre’s as well.  Her latest is Burn Bright, a YA novel that’s part sci-fi, part steampunk, part paranormal but all 100% original de Pierres. A review from myself will be forth coming (Hint: I thought it rocked).

You can find her work here or at most brick and mortar stores. The book depository also carries the Sentients of Orion Series the last of which(Transformation Space) won her this year’s Aurealis Award for best Sci-Fi novel.

Twelfth Planet Press · Give Away: Glitter Rose by Marianne de Pierres

Twelfth Planet Press (TPP)have organised another Goodreads giveaway.  This time they are offering Marianne de Pierres' collection of short stories titled Glitter Rose.  All you have to do to enter is register on Goodreads and click a button.

Follow this link to get to the competition page.

But more about the prize
Glitter rose is a first from TPP, being their first attempt at a hardcover.  And from all reports the end result is stunning.  This hardback printing is a limited edition print run signed by the author, well worth getting ones hands on.  It contains five short stories and has black and white illustrations throughout.

Synopsis from TPP:
The Glitter Rose stories are set against the background of Carmine Island (an island reminiscent of Stradbroke Island, Queensland) where a decade ago spores from deep in the ocean blew in, by a freak of nature, and settled on the island. These spores bring fierce allergies to the inhabitants of the island. And maybe other, more sinister effects. As we follow Tinashi’s journey of moving to and settling into island life, we get a clearer picture of just what is happening on Carmine Island.

Glitter Rose is named after the glitter rose dusks that happen at certain tides on the island – when the last of sunset has fallen, a strange phosphorescence can be seen on the sands of the beaches. Colourless at first, it rapidly changes to a “carpet of tiny, shining, rose-coloured grains” as the sky darkens.
If you can't wait to get a copy through the competition, the book can be found at Galaxy Books and Twelfth Planet Press

Yellowcake and Burn Bright hit the shelves

Two of Australia's top female speculative fiction writers have books being released today.  Margo Lanagan's Yellowcake is available in paperback, published by Allen and Unwin.

Yellowcake features 10 original short stories and follows up on earlier collected works Red Spikes and Black Juice.

No news of an eBook yet, but most of her other work has become available in that format, so it's a matter of patience.

The second title is the much anticipated Burn Bright by Marianne de Pierres. It's a rather dark YA offering. For ARC reviews check out this page.
