Readercon Releases a Safety Update

Folks new to the broad speculative fiction community may need a little background on what occurred at Readercon last August.  I did two posts here.  In short though the con had a Sexual Harassment Policy in place, an incident occurred and the organisation failed to follow though on its policy with the offending member.

After much discussion and good work from members within the organisation the situation was resolved and pledges were made to help improve future cons.  Readercon as released an update on where they are up to in meeting those pledges here.

Well worth a look for other convention organisers and for those thinking of attending conventions, for an insight into what should perhaps be best practise.

Lucky you for getting annual PD on the child abuse thing! We got a half day when it first became mandatory and then never again. Conventions are strange things; sometimes the victim is the GoH, especially in my own area of media fandom, where it's likely to be an actor. Not so much these days, perhaps, where media conventions are massive things where you pay hundreds of dollars to sit in the front row and watch a performance. But way back when, in the days when fans arranged the lot and there was one guest at a time, I recall an incident where the actor GoH was reduced to tears by a fan who stalked him. She was banned, I think permanently, not sure, but not a pleasant event, and he must have felt he couldn't make a public fuss because he WAS the GoH.

The regular PD is good policy. Studies uncover new information and because of the nature of abuse and the psychological reasons why we don't want to accept or acknowledge it happens its good to receive updates/reminders.

It is indeed good, but I don't think the government of the time cared about what happened to children, only cared that they were seen to be doing something, which is fairly typical of politicians whose only interest is in keeping their jobs. Right now, we have so many hoops to jump through to keep our registration that I don't know if there would even be TIME to keep up any individual thing, even something that important.
Recently our principal talked about the exponential growth of admin paperwork that teachers have to cope with now as compared to when he started. We also looked at the decline in real wages over that time. Doing more work for less money and being expected to fill a multitude of roles.
