Coode Street Episode 137

Our two gentlemen ramblers cover the Tiptree announcements and then raise the shadowy spectre of the “Grimdark” in modern fantasy, prompted by the twitter discussion that formed part of the background for my Grimdark post.

Coode Street 116 - An exhausted genre ?

itunescoodestreetJust a shout out for this particular edition of Coode Street starring Paul Kincaid whose article,"The Widening Gyre" in the LA Review of Books sparked some discussion around whether or not the genre of science fiction is exhausted.

Well worth a listen.

Coode Street–The Post Hugo Edition

So it looks like I have some internets back just as my regular podcasts roll out their shows.

itunescoodestreetNow the gents at Coode Street rolled out their post Hugo podcast.  They promised us interviews with various dignitaries and we got Gary and Jonathan.

Ah well it was a good show anyway with some nice commentary on the winners, and some further discussion prompted by Paul Kincaid on the exhausted status of Science Fiction.

Jonathan and Gary momentarily consider campaigning for a Hugo next year and then realise they can’t be stuffed.

You can play direct form the flash player below or download here.

Coode Street Podcast Episode 111–Curiosity Lander Edition

79552_logoWhere Gary and Jonathan talk of the big science fictional news, yes the playing of beach volleyball in the Horse Guards Parade grounds, not the Curiosity Lander, hours away from Mars.

But they do get on to recommended science fiction reads for those who are experiencing it for the first time.

And there’s mention of a Coode Street Award, though they haven’t rambled that far in my listening.

Any who download or play below:

1. It said in the show notes that this was a brief discussion.  Knowing their penchant for glorious rambling, I anticipate a half hour segment↩

Salon Futura Interview with Gary K Wolfe

Below is an interview conducted by Cheryl Morgan of Salon Futura fame.  She's interviewing Gary K. Wolfe who some readers may recognize as the American half of the Coode Street Podcast, the other being Jonathan Strahan.

The video runs to about 35 minutes and has some interesting points and observations to make about reviewing.  I found the discussion toward the end where Cheryl and Gary talk about publishers and the pressure placed on reviewers to review to a set timetable revealing.  I agree with Gary too when he says it doesn't take long for the novelty of a free book to wear off.

The interview was promoted at Salon Futura Issue 6 worth checking out if you are a SpecFic fan.

For those interested in critical reviewing Gary has a book of critical essays out called
