Galactic Chat 57 – Karen Miller

You can stream from the above player but it’s a long interview.

You can download from the Podbean site instead here (right click and save as).

In this week's episode I chat with Karen Miller or KE Mills as she is known for her Rogue Agent series.  Karen Miller has written for the media properties Star Wars and Stargate in addition to creating three of her own fantasy universes and populating them with books.

Her latest foray into fiction is the beginning of an epic five book series called The Tarnished Crown.  If you enjoy the deadly politics of A Song of Ice and Fire and a take no prisoners approach to character death you should enjoy this latest offering in Book 1: The Falcon Throne.

Karen and I talk about what it takes to write for media properties, the difference in writing fantasy and epic fantasy(in terms of author workload) and the importance of fitness if you are considering a long term career as a writer.

This interview is part of the Australian Women Writers Challenge 2013.  Please check out this page for more great writing from Australian women.awwbadge_2014

Galactic Chat 46 Ken MacLeod

Arriving a little later than we anticipated (Galactic Chat likes to try and keep to a fortnightly turnaround) is Helen Stubbs interview with Scottish science fiction author Ken MacLeod.

In today's chat Helen Stubbs interviews multi-award winning Science Fiction author Ken MacLeod.  They talk about his novel Intrusion, and his most recent publication, Descent.  Ken grew up with Iain Banks and relates some heart warming anecdotes about their friendship. They also cover Ken's current work plans and his writing process. You can download from this link.

Incoming: The Night Terrace by the evil geniuses behind Splendid Chaps

terrace If you were following all things Whovian for the 50th Anniversary special who would have known about Splendid Chaps.  Well they have decided to launch a sci-fi comedy podcast (edit: its actually a series Sean, that will be available for purchase after the kickstarter) called The Night Terrace.  A kickstarter will be launched in mid march, so keep your eyes open.

The Night Terrace

Anastasia Black used to save the world for the government, but now she just wants a quiet life. So when her house abruptly starts travelling in time and space she’s understandably miffed. She’s also not exactly thrilled about Eddie Jones, who happened to be on her doorstep at the time and is now her unlikely fellow traveller. University hasn’t prepared Eddie to cope with other worlds or time paradoxes, but he still thinks they’re a step up from selling electricity plans door-to-door.

Together Anastasia and Eddie will face alien invasions, hideous monsters, and a shadowy figure known only as “Sue”. All the while hoping the house will eventually take them home…

Night Terrace is an original science fiction comedy audio series written, produced and performed by the minds behind hit Doctor Who podcast Splendid Chaps. Initially funded by a Kickstarter campaign, the first series of eight episodes will also be available to purchase via digital download.

Until the Kickstarter campaign launches, watch this site, follow us on Twitter, watch the Splendid Chaps Facebook page, or sign up to our mailing list via the form to keep up to date with the latest Night Terrace news.   [Source]

End of 2013

Here it is.  The obligatory end of year post where I inflict my reflections on you.  This post will be a mixture of the personal and the professional( is my blogging professional?).  First up:

Reading

Number of books read

54

Number of manuscripts read

2

Gender Breakdown

Female 25 (46%)

Male 22 (41%)

Mixed 7 (13%)

Genre Break down

First things first, the number of works read is significantly down on the two previous years. I blame (ironically) having to manage and run a library.  About 7 hours a week were eaten up in commuting, not to mention that I did take over the helm at Galactic Chat and with the help of the dedicated team of roving interviewers managed to put out a show a week from mid year on.  But more on that later.  I suspect I will read more and work less next year.

I read only 7 more books after my October gender audit and while I still managed to read more women overall(53% when I take out mixed collections), it was still shy of the 60/40 split I aim for.

My genre breakdown as you would expect from a SpecFic reviewer is heavily weighted in favour of that genre.  I don’t expect that this will change too much.

Nationality/Ethnicity was an attempt to dig down into how diverse me reading is.  As you would expect the largest grouping is Australian authors (13 of which would be women) skewed by the Australian Women Writers Challenge.  The next biggest grouping being American authors, shows I think, the dominance of that market in publishing.  There might have been one or two traditionally published review books in my Australian authors but I suspect most SpecFic being published traditionally is coming in from the US.  The UK books would be mostly Crime, with some Young Adult fantasy.

Thanks to Charles Tan I discovered the wonderful Filipino writing community.  His tireless efforts in getting hard copies out and Flipreads’ forging ahead to make digital distribution inroads led me to discover some really great speculative fiction writers.  I now have several books to continue on with next year.

Thanks also to Joelyn Alexandra for bringing a number of works with her from the Singaporean community in 2012, some more will feature in my reading list next year as well.

What I would like to do next year is to incorporate some extra diversity in the form of QUILTBAG fiction.  There’s been a smattering of stories throughout some of the collections that I have read this year but would really like to challenge myself with some different perspectives and longer works.  I have enjoyed work from Benjanun Sriduangkaew (see Silent Bridge, Pale Cascade) and JY Yang.  Feel free to suggest QUILTBAG writers, collections, stories in the comments.

Podcasting

I started the year with some grand plans to run the Adventures of Bookonaut Podcast and managed to create 5 Episodes.  They are worth checking out here.  But then the opportunity came along to take on the Galactic Chat Podcast previously run by the award winning team that brings you Galactic Suburbia.  I had been a heavy contributor to the show (hence my desire to create my own podcast) and when Tansy and Alisa looked at their schedules they decided to offer the show running to me instead of closing it down.

I found out how hard (even with help) producing a podcast is.  Never forget the often silent behind the scenes work that goes into the free content you listen to.  That being said I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Relaunching in June with the prelaunch special interview with NK Jemisin it has been a good year.  Our achievements were:

  1. 22 Interviews in 6 months (almost an interview a week)
  2. Gender breakdown of 17 female and 5 male authors
  3. Nationality breakdown of 19 Australian(1 POC), 3 International (two POC included)
  4. Site visits quadrupled from 11652 at the start of 2012 to 44586 as of today
  5. Episode hits increased from 1493 to 3732 in the same period
  6. Our top 5 most downloaded episodes(bearing in mind some have been live longer) were
    1. Margo Lanagan and Rochita Loenen-Ruiz who tie on 192 downloads
    2. Julia Rios
    3. Kathleen Jennings
    4. NK Jemisin
    5. Stephen Ormsby

You can peruse our selection of interviews below, just clik on the icon in the top right hand corner to  see all the interviews.

Writing

I surprised myself this year by becoming a published poet.  A big thanks must go to Jodi Cleghorn and Adam Byatt who initiated the Post-It Note Poetry Event in February.  It was they and the subsequent formation of the Post It Note Poetry Society that saw me develop the confidence to start submitting first to non paying venues and then on to paying gigs.  My thanks to my fellow society members for their wise words and shoulders to cry on.

My tally this year was:

  • 2 poems hosted at The Glass Coin (non-paying curated site)
  • 1 poem published at Adelaide INDAILY magazine ( paid in stock)
  • 1 poem accepted for publication in March 2014 Tincture Journal (paid publication)
  • 1 poem accepted for Speculative Fiction Anthology published in 2014

I am probably forgetting things but looking back over the year there’s good reason I was feeling a bit knackered come the Christmas Holidays.  I think I can mark this year off as a success.

Thanks for reading and see you next year.

Small Blue Planet — Episode 01, Finland

Somehow I missed the launch of Small Blue Planet.  I don’t know what planet I’m was on at the time but it obviously wasn’t Earth.  Hosted on the Locus site it’s a monthly podcast devoted to talking to Science fiction and Fantasy personalities from around the world.  It features Cheryl Morgan, Hugos Sage and owner of  Wizard’s Tower Books with asides from Karen Burnham.

In their inaugural show she interviews Jukka Halme and Marianna Leikomaa

Have a listen, I found it very interesting and am looking forward to picking up some of the authors works mentioned.

They’re back – Writer & the Critic Episode 27

PD*3141165 And they have been away so long this is the first time I have typed a post about them on the new laptop.  This episode starts with acknowledgement that Mondy will be starring in an upcoming episode of Hoarders Australia called Burried in Books as he confess to the fact that he has a massive fire risk in his garage (1500 unread books).

No not really but hey I think I could watch a reality show with Mondy in it.

But seriously 1500 books.

Kirstyn has moved house to somewhere in the wilds of Ballaratia, consequently they had to break into Dave’s house (co-host on the much underrated Shooting the Poo podcast).

This week’s episode covers Infinite Jest and House of Leaves and is complemented by the wonderful personalities of aforementioned hosts.

Rabia Gale interview on Adventures of a Bookonaut Podcast

(Download Link – Mp3)

In Episode 4 I talk to Speculative Fiction author Rabia Gale about her diverse collection of published work.

We discuss self publishing, the freedom it gives to experiment with form and genre, and the reading canon that is the legacy of commonwealth countries. If you haven't come across Rabia's work before you are missing out. She's one of those writers that make the genre work for her and not the other way round.

Check out her blog at Rabia Gale - Writer at Play

Thankyou for listening, you may leave audio feedback at https://www.speakpipe.com/Bookonaut, or you may leave written feedback on Facebook, the Podomatic page, or at my blog.

Episode 77 and Galactic Suburbia hits 3 years

2678367136_6fa96e3d11 And that’s more than most television series.  I have been an avid listener for about 2 years of that time and must say that Galactic Suburbia has changed the way I look at a number of things, reading, writing and life in general.  And they have done it all through an indirect conversational promotion of feminism.  So Happy Birthday, Tansy, Alisa, Alex and Finchy for bringing us quality commentary for free.

Last Short Story Podcast Episode 1

The first regular season Last Short Story podcast is out.  There were two previous “pre-season” podcasts produced by Coode Street Studios as part of a “testing of the waters” both for the casters themselves and the audience.

In this Episode Ian Mond and Jonathan Strahan discuss the December 2012 issue of Clarkesworld and the January 2013 episode of Lightspeed.

You can stream from the player below or download here.

Lightspeed 32There’s honest and frank discussions of the works contained within those to publications. So if you plan to read them its probably best to do so before the podcast.  You will find the stories for free online, but please consider subscribing, you’ll get them in the much more readable ereader formats.

The stories discussed in from :Clarkesworld #75, December 2012 and Lightspeed #32, January 2013.  All the Clarkesworld pieces are available online, some of the Lightspeed stories are yet to tick over to free online status.

Verity! Episode 1 – The Snowmen

VerityEp01Episode one has arrived.  How did it go? Well pretty damn good for a first episode.  Sometimes a show needs a bit of settling in before it hits its stride, but these women of Who, these Mistresses of Time have got their game on.

Now if I can only differentiate the American accents. No matter.

The discussion on Moffat’s Christmas special was good and the breadth of knowledge and experience in the team meant that I got an inkling for tracking down some some Troughton era stories.

New to Dr Who podcasts - Verity Episode 0

verity copyThe women of the Verity podcast have got together and release a pre season podcast.  An introduction to the varied bunch of female Who fans that will be bringing a diverse conversation about Who to our eardrums.

As they relate their Journey to Who Fandom in this podcast I am reminded of my discussion with Helen Merrick on the diversity of women in science fiction history.

The participants in the podcast come from vastly different who backgrounds. From those who only started with New Who, to those who have been watching since the black and white days – whose mothers  took them along to fan conventions or meet ups.

It looks to be a promising show.  The first official cast is going to discuss the Christmas special and I think there’s enough dissenting opinion/ varied positions that it will be a good crunchy discussion.

The Writer and the Critic Episode 26

PD*3141165The latest and the last for a little while as both of the hosts of the show are moving house, so it will be three long excruciating months before we get to hear Kirstyn’s insightful commentary and Ian singing 80-90s cover versions of Bon Jovi/Bryan Adams.

So Episode 26 is a non fiction episode where they tackle Gary K. Wolfe’s Evapourating Genres and James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon , a biography by Julie Phillips.

Now despite it being non-fiction centred, I found it to be one of their better episodes (not that they aren’t all pretty good).  Their discussion on first authors and criticism got me thinking.

And of course they do mention my new podcast Adventures of a Bookonaut so maybe I might be slightly biased.

The Sheldon biography sounds very interesting as well and I’m not really one for biographies.

Anyway go to the show notes here for some more detail.  You can download it as an mp3 here or stream from the player below.
