Ramble On– Coode Street 91

I have the last two casts from the Coode Street duo on my player for the 5 hour round trip to Adelaide tomorrow for Adelaide Writers Week.  So in honour of our Speculative Fiction Ramblers I offer you Led Zeppelin with Ramble On.

If you listen closely to the lyrics, you can just tell Led Zeppelin were fans of fantasy.

But on to the Coode Street Podcast.

In Episode 91 Gary and Jonathan discuss the literary concept of the “Fix-up” novel.  What are “fix up” novels? Where did the term originate and how do terms enter the genre lexicon?

This episode comes with the usual disclaimer:

They ramble and they most probably get some stuff wrong.

Ralph McQuarrie passes at 82

ralph_dvdMany wouldn’t know Ralph McQuarrie. Indeed I wouldn’t have known of him had I not received a portfolio of his The Empire Strikes Back art for my 13th birthday.

But his influence stretched beyond the Star Wars films.  His work can be glimpsed in a number of Fantasy/Adventure films and Television series.

McQuarrie  was involved with:

Starwars

Star Trek

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Cocoon

Close Encounters

E.T.

Battlestar Galactica

to name just a few.  He unfortunately suffered from Parkinson's in his later years and was not able to continue working, nor attending many of the conventions the sprang up around the titles he worked on.

You can post a message at his Facebook page.

Nominate Me! or Someone Else

12pp-newpink-webLGAlisa Krasnostein of Twelfth Planet Press has done a great job of going through all of the Twelfth Planet Press publications and associated productions, letting us know what publications are eligible for what awards.

I sincerely wish more publishers and authors would do this.  I think its increasingly important as we move more into the digital sphere and its easier for folk from other countries to read great Australian talent.

Please check out her post here.

But I will draw your attention to the Tin Duck nominations that close in a couple of days.  The Galactic Chat Podcast of which I am a member is eligible for the Unpaid/Fan Production category (Alisa is a Western Australian).

So if you feel so inclined you can register here and nominate us for

Best WA Unpaid or Fan Production.
