Year of the Ladybird released

I somehow missed this earlier in the month.

Graham Joyce’s, The Year of the Ladybird, mentioned in this Coode Street podcast was released in Australian around the 9th of July. Joyce’s other works have also borne the scrutiny of the Writer and the Critic podcast.

I hesitate to say I am a fan of Joyce only because I haven’t read more than a chapter. Odd, I know but I couldn’t and still can’t afford the time to read purely for pleasure (gives Ziggurat of review books a weary stare). That being said, I thought the writing was good enough to purchase everything with his name on it.

Its only available in hardback at the moment but if that’s too pricey Booktopia have some of his other work at a decent price here.

Coode Street 116 - An exhausted genre ?

Just a shout out for this particular edition of Coode Street starring Paul Kincaid whose article,"The Widening Gyre" in the LA Review of Books sparked some discussion around whether or not the genre of science fiction is exhausted.

Well worth a listen.

Coode Street–The Post Hugo Edition

So it looks like I have some internets back just as my regular podcasts roll out their shows.

Now the gents at Coode Street rolled out their post Hugo podcast. They promised us interviews with various dignitaries and we got Gary and Jonathan.

Ah well it was a good show anyway with some nice commentary on the winners, and some further discussion prompted by Paul Kincaid on the exhausted status of Science Fiction.

Jonathan and Gary momentarily consider campaigning for a Hugo next year and then realise they can’t be stuffed.

Basic Android App for Australian Specfic Podcasts

So I am playing around again on Appsgeyser which allows you to create simple Android Apps. I have collected 4 of Australia’s Speculative Fiction Podcast feeds and placed them into the app generator. The end result is an android app that you can download so that you can easily access the feeds of the following podcasts.

Coode Street
Galactic Suburbia
Galactic Chat
The Writer and The Critic

Think of it like a uber-bookmark that allows you to switch between webpages via tabs rather than having to save each as a separate book mark and go to their respective webpages.

You can download via this link or scan the QR code below.

Cool if you listen to podcasts via a wifi enabled tablet or smartphone.

Coode Street Podcast Episode 111–Curiosity Lander Edition

Where Gary and Jonathan talk of the big science fictional news, yes the playing of beach volleyball in the Horse Guards Parade grounds, not the Curiosity Lander, hours away from Mars.

But they do get on to recommended science fiction reads for those who are experiencing it for the first time.

And there’s mention of a Coode Street Award, though they haven’t rambled that far in my listening.

Ramble On– Coode Street 91

I have the last two casts from the Coode Street duo on my player for the 5 hour round trip to Adelaide tomorrow for Adelaide Writers Week. So in honour of our Speculative Fiction Ramblers I offer you Led Zeppelin with Ramble On.

If you listen closely to the lyrics, you can just tell Led Zeppelin were fans of fantasy.

But on to the Coode Street Podcast.

In Episode 91 Gary and Jonathan discuss the literary concept of the “Fix-up” novel. What are “fix up” novels? Where did the term originate and how do terms enter the genre lexicon?
