Rendering women Invisible

I disagree that he's not mentioned them as horror writers. From the way I read his article (3 times) the horror writers were all listed as genre writers, and there were 6 women mentioned. Then there were additional crossover writers mentioned, which included 3 women. Plus, given that the article was published in SQ Mag, and not a personal blog post, modifying the article would have been difficult to do without access. Not mentioning TPP was an oversight but there was no erasure of women as far as I can read.

Yeah I think that point may be open to interpretation, depends what you bring to the article. The article was given a preface by Gerry Huntman pretty quickly so he could have offered to make the changes. Again I'd argue that the omission of TPP is erasing a woman in the industry, a fairly important one at that. Again Brown is a good bloke its not intentional but nethier are a lot of omissions
SeandBookonaut. Please get your facts straight. 1. Sophie Yorkston, the Editor in Chief, added the preface - which was in fact intended from the start, but was modified to address the concerns (and which I support, btw), 2. Your blog states in the first para '(which has since been amended)' - while technically correct, we added a preamble - we did nothing else. While not necessarily intended, that statement may give readers the impression we amended the Title, sub-titles, or the text of the articles - which we didn't.

I'm not going to add to this debate - our preamble simply states our intention, and we welcome debate and comment deriving from it. However, while much of the debate is centred on what people think other people are thinking and doing (and perceptions of course), at least get your facts right.
Gerry, I was a bit taken aback by the tone of this response. But on rereading my preamble, I can see my wording has caused confusion(its poorly worded). I will amend it immediately. I did mean to state that you had added a preamble to reflect that it wasn't the original article as read by the two conversing.

At no time did I mean to imply that you or any of the SQ staff had acted inappropriately and that's a possible outcome of my wording. I apologize unreservedly.

As to Sophie Yorkston being credited with the change, I read the note at the top of the article and the author window at the bottom, both of which reference you as having posted, so perhaps I can be forgiven for that assumption. Apologies to Sophie specifically.

I don't understand why you were taken aback by my tone, as it was simply factual and straightforward. It seems to me that too often, as I inferred earlier, people thinking about what people think quite a bit - and don't always get it right. My only concern in my Point 2 was that people may believe that we made changes to the content of the articles in response to the debate. This concerned us as we didn't want to.

As opposed to blogs, such as yours, where the bloggist is the author in almost every case, magazines operate completely differently. The paradigm applied to us is no different in the electronic and print media - the author isn't necessarily the poster/typesetter. But you still can be forgiven for that assumption :)

I want to assure you that I, as publisher, took no major offence here, but I do believe that a reasonable standard of accuracy and clarity needs to be employed by those who focus on the actions and motivations of others in the public. We are human, however, and the beauty of blogs and ezines is that things can get fixed rapidly, where there's motivation.

cheers
Gerry

Your position and concerns are noted. :D

Cheers

I accept that leaving out Twelfth Planet Press was certainly an error on my part, and that some of my language choice may have been misinterpreted as somehow insinuating that women don’t write horror, but that was never my intention.

Women do write horror, and great horror it is. This is why the first book out through my publishing house was a Kaaron Warren collection, and then a noir novella by Deborah Sheldon, both great writers of horror and thriller literature.

Also, Twelfth Planet Press have obviously made a big impact in horror, especially in publishing female horror writers and winning many awards with published works, and to have left them out was, in truth, a glaring omission.
I agree that the article in question would have been more accurate if TPP was included.

GNBraun - as an ezine, we are lucky to be able to make changes in-flight, as long as it is done honestly and transparently. If you want, by all means add something about TPP and fling it in our direction.

Cool, Gerry. I'll get you something soon.
Appreciate the chance to add to it.

I thought this would be the case.
Geoff, I think Alisa has made an apology on FB directly to you for using twitter as the medium to raise the issue. I tagged you, but you might be logged out.
Postscript: read the comment below the article. http://sqmag.com/2014/04/30/edition-14-article-st...
