The Cuckoo’s Calling pre-review

the-cuckoo-s-calling The news broke earlier in the week that the author of the The Cuckoo’s Calling wasn’t in fact Robert Galbraith but JK Rowling.  I hear that the one star muppets on Amazon apparently only turned up after that fact was revealed and until that point it had been reasonably well received for a debut i.e. positive reviews and reasonable sales (reasonable unless you don’t trust those dastardly publishers who are obviously lying and had to leak the fact that it was JK Rowling, because OMG it had only sold 500 HC copies in three months – seriously go back to saying the moon landings were faked).

I really would have liked to have read it without knowing it was JK Rowling, to have given it as clean a read as possible.  I haven’t read anything else by her but the knowledge that the author is competent and established does mean that certain biases come into play.

Still it will be judged on whether it holds my attention, entertains.  I am not a hardcore crime reader but I do enjoy the genre from time to time. So that’s all I intend to judge her on.

I'm curious, in a way I wasn't curious about the other one, because I do like crime fiction. In fact, I read Simon Tolkien's crime novel in ebook, out of curiosity, because of that love of crime fiction. (Not bad, I did finish it, but too many different POVs, very old-style murder mystery). I don't know if you intend to read the "Robert Galbraith" book, but if not, I do recommend Harry Potter. I discovered that series before it became big, on the recommendation of Alison Goodman, back when we were both on the Aussiecon 3 committee.

I am reading Cuckoos calling now - as good as another top notch crime writer I have read. I may one day read HP but it won't be in the near future :D

This book did move up my review list, not just because it was a Rowling but because it was a woman writer. I also wanted to have some basis on which to judge the inevitable attacks against her.
Don't know about attacks, but she will now be of interest to Sisters In Crime - I actually heard about this on RN as an interview with Sue Turnbull, a SIC committee member.

Apparently the 1 star reviews only started turning up after the news broke. Read a guardian article where a guy who had only read previews on Amazon had a real bee in his bonnet about her being unethical using a pseudonym.
