Amazon buys Goodreads

goodreads So that’s the Book Depository and now my favorite review location gobbled up by Amazon.  It’s not too bad if they don’t change too much.  I quite like the way that Goodreads does things.  I fear that Amazon will either close it down, incorporate it and slowly bleed off members and then close it down or make all roads lead to Amazon.

I am sure more knowledgeable minds will through their two cents on this, but anytime the book world gets smaller, less diverse I can’t agree that it’s a good thing, especially in the long term.

Your thoughts?

I'm not comfortable with it at all. After someone on LinkedIn said that they could no longer follow a link to Barnes And Noble, I went to the site and experimented with the link that let you compare prices. It was gone. Well, it was there, but the links to sellers were gone. The link to Bookworld was still there...does Amazon own that? I have an Amazon membership because Kindle is the only book App on our students' iPads, but I don't make much use of it, except the occasional free download. I prefer iBooks for my ebooks, as I can use an iTunes card without giving up my card details.

I cam across a free Library cataloging site this morning and all links lead to Amazon their too.
Oh, dear. Well, the only library cataloging site I use is SCIS, which is Australian, run from Carlton and you pay for a subscription. And it gives you other services too. Scary, though, isn't it? The owners of Goodreads must have been made an offer they couldn't refuse. There was a bright, perky announcement on the site that implied it was good news...whether they were genuinely happy about it is another matter. They had some trouble with the company I shall not name ths time only a few months ago and had to wipe their connections. And now they're OWNED by said company.
