Ditmars 2013 Best Artwork

We see the work, but I wonder how many of us actually consciously notice it, before diving into the words between the covers.  Do we appreciate the way in which a cover can alter the way that we enjoy a book? How black and white interior illustrations can alter our imaginings.

Below are the nominated artworks - bar the Adam Browne black and white interior artwork of which only one is shown.

You’ll notice the category is all small press, again reflecting the support given to Australian artists by that end of the industry.

In terms of “could have beens” I am surprised to not see any of the covers Amanda Rainey did for Fablecroft or Twelfth Planet Press.  She creates simple and striking covers that are almost instantly recognizable.

In the end, the nominations are made by people willing to support their favourite writers and artists. This is not a judged thing. And what is on the list is lovely. It will be a close-run thing, I suspect. There are plenty of things that should, IMO, have been on the short list and weren't. Luck of the draw! ;-)

As the ASIM art director, I appreciate just how lucky we are to get professionals to do art for small press for the tiny fees we can pay them. I have known some artists from overseas to withdraw their submissions when I tell them what we pay. These folk are fans. It makes all the difference.

Won't disagree with you there. I just found it odd that Amanda didn't even make it onto the eligibles. But then if I was thinking straight I could have added her. I think Art work, unless you working closely in the book/magazine business is something the general reader will see but not necessarily consciously appreciate its part of the package.
