Book depository to stop selling eBooks

I received an email from The Book Depository this morning informing me of their decision to cease selling and supporting commercial ebooks.

We are contacting you in relation to your eBook purchase BDG-950-2683314940 for Die Trying which was purchased on 25/09/2010.

The Book Depository has come to the decision to cease selling eBooks, as we feel that the customer experience we were able to offer was not as good as it should have been. This is partially driven by complexity in format and the number of differing devices, which we found often led to customer frustration. We will instead focus on adding more new books to our, already 8 million strong, title selection.

We have spotted that you still have 2 download(s) remaining. Each eBook purchased will have 3 downloads allotted.

If you wish to use the remaining downloads, we ask that you do so by the 30th June 2012. It will not be possible to download purchased eBooks from the Book Depository sites after this date.

……

It’s these sort of decisions that reinforce to me the need to be able to store and backup files in a number of formats ( imagine their service wasn’t one that allowed you to store your own copies).  Nothing is forever, and companies change direction all the time.

It’s why I applaud publishers that have decided to remove DRM. That long overdue (and largely redundant) decision allows me to move and convert file formats with relative ease.  In the end only I can be relied upon to look after and store the books that I own, just like my paper book library.

I am a big fan of Comixology and their guided view app for comics.  They would have a couple of hundred dollars from me in comics if I wasn’t wary of the fact that at a moments notice I could lose access to some or all of the comics I have purchased from them, so tightly wrapped in DRM is their selection.

So…

Does not having access to an ebook file to archive yourself worry you? Am I just old fashioned? Where do you think ebooks might go? Subscription based services? Do you buy the excuse that TBD gives above?

Gosh! [actual word used was stronger]. No, I don't buy it. Surely this is because it was purchased by Amazon. And whatever you say about Amazon (who wants this gorilla) they DO exceptional customer service that's for sure. The guess was they purchased BD to get into our market. But I would have thought they would try and get users over to Amazon for ebooks????

Well they are giving away kindles in onsite competitions. So I think they may just be letting it die a natural death and then peeps will just go for the most visible product.

I wonder how long before the free postage deal bites the dust too.
Hmmm, I feel unfaithful to my local booksellers everytime I have purchased from them - but at Christmas I HAVE been guilty (forgive me Indies!!!)
My recent post - Excellent Ebooks Sydney wrap-up (APA Workshop)
I try and go through Booktopia to assuage my guilt xD
I don't have an ereader and I don't buy ebooks.

But as of yesterday, I've lost access to a computer with a graphics card good enough to support my access to an online game that I played, and I am so annoyed that I spent so many hours in that game making a kickarse character, only to now not be able to access something I feel is MINE!

So I can totally sympathise.

"I don't have an ereader and I don't buy ebooks. " o.0 :)

I just think its an interesting trend. I wonder if in the future there will be more subscription services for books as there are now for music.

I wish I could play online games, don't have the internets to handle it though. Le sigh.
I'm not really surprised BD has stopped selling ebooks, they never really promoted them and now with Amazon as the owner they won't want to support the rival file types. I've been disappointed in BD lately - the prices of print books for us have been hiked up since Amazon took over.

I won't buy from cloud sellers especially when they have the gall to charge $30+ for an ebook I don't have any physical ownership of. The files are too vulnerable to server issues, hacks and change of business policies for me.
I have been going with Booktopia and small press. Yes, cloud sellers make me nervous as do subscription only services.
(I'm an ebook reader, not much of a comics reader.) It doesn't bother me personally, just because I disinfect the moment an ebook hits my computer, and I run automatic offsite backups of my Calibre library. But I realise not everyone knows how to do all this, and they shouldn't have to. I reckon if you sell ebooks with DRM and a re-download capability, you should maintain the service you've sold, not drop it with a couple of weeks' notice.

Well I'd be more of a comic book reader if I had possession of the files rather then a licence to view :) .

Yeah I do monthly backups of my Calibre library as well and this news was not a great blow to me because of that fact. But yes I think it pays to be wary of services that don't allow for you to downlad the file or to move it to devices of your own choosing.

I don't mind paying premium prices for ebooks when I own the file. It's one big reason I have avoided some of the services offered in Australia through Booki.sh for example. I upload my own files to Booki.sh but I won't buy books through them because things can change, companies can get bought out.
Oh really awesome, i have really enjoyed the piece of content that you have shared with us. Actually, we should to appreciate on this effort. Anyways, you are absolutely right, that books are one of the biggest source of knowledge and information. But its really a fact that reading books are not an easy job. A man required lot of dedication to complete a book. I am also trying to make a habit of learning regarding my professional industry to boost my knowledge but still failed. Few websites i have also downloaded from bookpdf.pk. just to enhance my knowledge. Anyways, once again thanks for your effort.
